6-29-2023 back blast – Moonshiner @ The Boondocks New Parking Lot

It was quite an honor to lead the first workout on the brand new parking lot at The Boondocks. Here is a little rundown of our morning…

The temperature was mild in the mid sixties…the skies were overcast with building clouds giving a glimpse of the impending storms…the PAX were filled with nervous excitement that bordered on giddiness. With only the unknown to look forward to, we headed out from the flag in the general direction of fresh pavement.

I sensed a collective trepidation rumbling through the ranks, so we made a couple of stops along the way to still our hearts and steel our nerves (and do some stretching). I am not sure if Cochran was crying out of fear, excitement, or allergies but he was definitely crying. Yank and Pelican were trying to distract their minds from the inevitable with mindless chatter (even more mindless than normal). As we reached the baseball field we nearly lost our resolve and there was talk of returning to the flag (so Portabucket could turn off his truck lights) but oh no!! We had come this far and would not turn back.

As we passed the ghost of John Fogerty our destination just started to come into view. I think it was Virginia Slims who rightly noted that that it looked like an infinite pool of black glass being beckoned home to the heart of a black hole. We pressed on.

I stumbled slightly as I thought about the potential repercussions of leading young Duffer into the horrors that we might face in mere minutes, but he seemed oddly unfazed. Almost as if he was not scared at all. Or perhaps he was trying to figure out how Single Source got his F3 Name. I knew he would have to face this challenge just like all the other men so I faced forward and continued.

After a few more steps the black glass was replaced my a complex maze of stone cold white lines. I looked over at Layover and as we locked eyes I knew he was thinking exactly what I was…these white lines must be the pulverized bones from ancient giant panthers that used to rule this land. Before I could ask him if that was what he was thinking, our lungs were filled with a heavy cloud of asphalt and tar. “Just keep going” I told myself as we neared this unknown black & white death trap.

I might have chicken out at the last moment, but the parking lot is on a slight decline so our momentum took us onto the new parking lot. It was pretty cool. We did a bunch of exercises and running and then headed back to the flag.
