Typically, a backblast recounts all the mumble chatter, silly nicknames, the exercises we endured, and the accomplishments of the day. We did all that today—but this backblast reflects on the past six years, a journey that has profoundly shaped me as a man, friend, father, coach, and person.

Six years ago, LePew saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. He told me, “I’ll be at your driveway at 5:15 a.m. to take you to this workout. Dress warm and bring gloves—it’s always outside.” That was my introduction to F3, an always-free workout group for men built on fitness, faith, and fellowship.

I struggled through that first workout, earning the name “Gisele” for my admiration of the GOAT, Tom Brady. LePew dropped me off afterward, saying, “I’ll be back to pick you up Thursday—same time.” That consistency got me into a rhythm, and before long, 4:55 a.m. became a habit.

Fast forward to today, and I was joined by 15 other HIMs ranging in age from 14 to 54. Some of these men I knew before F3; others have become close friends along the way. As I reflected on the day, I couldn’t help but reminisce about how transformative these six years have been.

I’ve lost weight (down about 50 pounds overall, despite some ups and downs), run three half-marathons, navigated life’s highs and lows—being laid off after 19 years at the same company, adopting my son, watching my two daughters thrive in college and high school, enduring moments that challenged my mental health, and mourning the loss of loved ones. Through it all, I’ve had the support of an incredible network of men who have walked alongside me.

F3 has created a sense of community that touches nearly every part of my life. It’s rare to go anywhere in the city without running into someone I know—someone who’s likely a fellow member of F3.

LePew, the same man who introduced me to this group, often shares historical anecdotes that inspire us. One of his favorites is The Man in the Arena. I was pulled into that arena—fearful at first—but it was exactly what I needed. Over the years, many others have joined, including today my good friend Jeff, FNG Hoosier Daddy.

I’m endlessly grateful for this group, this network, and the friends who have enriched my life. These six years have been incredible, and I can’t wait to see what the next six will bring. – Gisele
