6.16.23 Back Blast: The Chopper @ Veterans Memorial

So… it was Thursday, the eve of the day I would have the Q at Vets. I was still working my wienke waiting for inspiration. Then it came to me. Vets is an AO like no other. Hell, it’s a park like no other. As you approach off Taylorsville Rd, you see the tank and lit up chopper. You enter in and and are welcomed by the five American flags adorning the breathtaking memorial wall. It was then that I thought, why don’t I find something tough to do in honor of one of our fallen. I searched up Hero WODs (workout of the day) and immediately found one that said Hero Friday, “Bert.” If you read the preblast, you learned a little about Albert P Gettings , the ultimate sacrifice he paid and who he left behind. This WOD was put together in 2018 and every quarter his fellow Marines in Fox Company perform this workout at the Albert P Gettings award ceremony. If it’s good enough for the Marines, it’s good enough for us!

The workout would be this: For time, you were to complete 50 Burpees, run 400 meters (appx 2 laps), 100 Merkins, 400m run, 150 walking lunges, 400m run, 200 Squats, 400m run, 150 walking lunges, 400m run, 100 Merkins, 400m run & finally 50 Burpees. Some groans from the PAX and Diablo almost immediately reminded everyone that if you do everything with proper form…ain’t no way you’re getting this all in for the time allotted. The PAX that would be up for the challenge:

Ladybird (R), Leno (R), Crash (R), Earmuffs (R), Fertile Myrtle, Suzuki, Doubtfire, Diablo, No Sho (FNG), Perro, Huey, Lockbox, Masse’, Bombay, Pastel, Meatball, Tony Malito, BigBird (Q)

Everyone worked hard, we all modified where needed (cuz let’s face it, 300 walking lunges is a hella-ton!), and we all felt the magic that going through a mini battle together can give you! Nice work men!

Then there was Tony Malito…Meatball was the first to chime in that TM was all jacked up on life, more so than usual on this Friday. I mean, he didn’t even get up to the seal before he was heard jawing loudly at someone, about something, while he was still in the lot. Maybe it was because he told his cousin (by marriage…poor bastard; btw, welcome, er, uh, welcome back, or…whatever…No Sho) that, “out here I’m a pretty big deal,” and he had to bring the extra flavor. Maybe it was because he got to see Leno, Lady Bird, Meatball and Bombay all in the same space. Maybe it was just because he’s an emotional dude that gets extry amped up when he’s out with his brothers having fun on a Friday. Let me just tell you, at no other AO, while doing a HERO WOD will you hear so much mumble chatter and dare I say, not one but several belly laughs echoing in the park (mostly from Leno…) than at Veterans Memorial on this HERO Friday.

I said it at COT but we all have special gifts that we are blessed with (some more flamboyant than others) and it is pretty special when those gifts are shared amongst brothers. This one was one for the record books from this Bird’s eye view. Thanks for being my boys for the day!!

Until next time…

BigBird
