I thought Pelican would be happy with me. I felt inspired to hold an F3 on 3 basketball practice Q in preparation for this weekend’s tournament (beginning promptly at 0600 – of course after teams are decided and rules discussed). I felt sure that he would be in attendance and give me the first nice comment that I’ve ever had from him since May 30th, 2019. I finished up by putting the last period on the preblast and with giddy excitement, I quickly tagged #blasts and hit “publish.” Exactly 20 minutes after my post showed up, Pelican’s preblast would come in and not only was he not pleased, he told readers not to pay attention to your Bird. I then realized two things. 1) Pelican actually had the Q lined up at the Boondocks for his F3 on 3 practice, probably long ago and 2) in his words, “F3 on 3 practice is and always has been held at the Boondocks the Tuesday of tournament week.” I mean, I guess that’s true. If two other years means “always” then, sure. And I was there last year. Probably was a Tuesday…All I remember is that the scouting report wasn’t too good…
Anyway, my “B” team was stoked to be there and outnumbered his squad by 1. The PAX: Ladybird (R), E-Z Pass, Tinkle, Fungi, Snowden, Abacus, McStuffins, Captain Crunhberry, Snack Shack, PCI, BigBird (Q)
0530, disclaimer about not being a professional (leader of a workout or definitely at basketball), and headed out for a warmup mosey. Returned back by the courts for COP with Nuclears, Grass Grabbers, Bobby Hurleys, Runners Stretch, quad stretch and Kendra Newman’s. Slowzey over to the cones for…
Suicides: Instead of a basketball court, ours was about 100 yards. One round regular, one round with Bernie’s and the last round back to regular. Your Bird got beat once by McStuffins and another time by E-Z Pass. These young pups just keep getting faster! YHC did smoke em on the last round though….gotta teach em some endurance.
Couple of 10 counts and then we did some 4 corners around the lot. Sprint, side shuffle, Bernie, side shuffle (X2). Snack Shack was concerned that we weren’t going to get any basketball in. Never fear my friend!
Layup drill: we would run rounds of layups going from one goal to the opposing side. For every layup that was missed, we owed 5 Burpees. By the time it was over we would’ve owed about 150 Burpees so we opted for 10 Burpees, followed by 10 IC Jump Lunges and 10 more Burpees.
Elbow drill: In my head this worked out perfectly. I even helped coach my son’s team and we would do these at practice so it should have been easy enough. Let’s just say, I’m glad Fungi was there to extinguish the dumpster fire that it started out to be.
Knockout: All good practices end in a round of knockout so we would follow suit. Fungi virtually walked his daughter to school, Ladybird conceded the win to someone else and…if you ever want to see Snack Shack move faster than you’ve seen before…play knockout. He came away the victor.
Scouting report from a Bird’s eye view: Ladybird is an excellent observer/coach, E-Z Pass’s form was impeccable, Tinkle is gonna be the one to watch and you should be hopeful that he’s on your team, Fungi’s good at everything, Snowden’s great in the paint, Abacus is methodical, much like everything else he does, McStuffins is fast and agile, Captain Crunchberry is great at layups and even better at following his shots, Snack Shack will surprise the sh#t out of you and PCI can run all day…literally. Your Bird…well, just hope that if he’s on your team it’s on a team of four.
Good luck this Saturday to those that are playing and for heaven’s sake, please let don’t let Pelican’s team come away with the trophy. We’d never hear the end of it for 365 days.
Until next time…probably not on a Tuesday the week of the tournament.
