It was to be a big day at The Stable and I knew I had to be on my “A” game. Success is never guaranteed but one way to make sure my brain was out of the early morning fog and my body was prepared to deliver was to get out for a pre run with Sewanee. I would meet up with him and depends a couple of minutes before 0500 as we waited to see if PI was going to come in hot, rolling through the grass to his normal parking spot. 23 minutes and three heated, blistering (at least for your Bird anyway) miles later, we were back to the startex to see some dudes already circled up and more pulling in. D-List said he ran too (in his car), Viking was getting in Merkins to stay ahead of the challenge, and Lightfoot was prepped, towel in hand to make sure we were all in check.
0530 hit, recited the disclaimer from Cockpot’s backblast and we were ready to get underway. 17 in of us in all were ready to get silly.
The PAX: Sweanee, Lumbergh, Flex Seal, Wet Bandit, D-List, depends, Viking, Subfloor, Beans, Maytag, Mannequin, Ferb, Steve-O, Donovan, Montezuma, Lightfoot, BigBird (Q)
One thing to preface with: The Stable has come to be known (among other things) for the Q’s bringing a solid playlist. Well, YHC had a playlist of sorts but after this morning it was a good possibility that I may not be invited back. 1) Due to the playlist itself. 2) There were quite a few ads. and 3) My phone plan with Consumer Cellular was over my data limit so the data I did have went incredibly slow giving cause to breaks in the action and some gripes and groans from the PAX.
We would start with a small little warmup mosey. Following that, it was time to make good on my promise from the pre blast. Figuring it would be a good way to count our blessings, the first thing we we’d do would be to SSH to the song Born to be Alive by Patrick Hernandez. We’d drop for burpees intermittently until the song was nearly over. Maytag once more called me out on finishing the song early but, enough was enough…recover with 20 IC Moroccan Nightclubs to get the shoulders nice and loose.
Next, we would mosey over to the back of the church and grab a space on the wall. Informed the PAX that, ironically enough, that I was brought up on Sesame Street and one of my favorite songs as a wee lad was Ladybug Picnic. We would do a wall sit for the duration of the 58 second song.
Following that, we’d mosey out about 75 yards, circled up and did some Manamana. More SSHs for the duration of that song from the Muppets and we’d drop for a Burpee every time we heard “Manamana.” Recover with a slowzey over to the cones. For the duration of the next song (Hahaha ! – not sure who the artist is but it’s a pretty annoying little techno song with some laughter as the hook.) There were three cones setup about 30 yards apart. We would start with 25 Merkins and then do Suicides with the cones, R & R until the song was over. Recover with a short little mosey and circled up once more for…
Wonkey Donkey. Plank for the entirety of the book that was made into a song and got in two Donkey Kicks every time we heard “wonkey donkey.” PAX in awe and amazed, Sweat puddles on the ground and with shoulders on fire, Steve-O mentioned that Bird likes to keep ’em guessing. He ain’t wrong… From there, we’d mosey back to startex and circled up for the next thang.
Surfin Bird by the Trashmen. Set it up to say that while the song was playing, we would get in about 33 seconds of each exercise (Burpees, Mac Tar Jai’s [sp], Plank Jacks & Mountain Climbers) This one almost didn’t happen as my phone plan was really giving me troubles. I had given up and was about to modify this part until magically, “Well everybody’s heard, about the word…” starts ringing through my JBL speaker. Run back to my spot and LET’S GO!!! 2 minutes and 22 seconds of gloriousness! Surprisingly, once this was done, we still had about 8 minutes to spare. Since we hadn’t done any Mary yet, it seemed the perfect time to get in…
Captain Thor: One BBSU to 4, 2 count American Hammers. Then 2 and 8, 3 and 12…so on and so forth until we got to 10 and 40. We’d pause for a break after 7 and 28 to learn a bit about a few guys, how long they’ve been coming out and how they got their names. We all finished together at 10 and 40 and…it was awesome!!
Time was called. We circled around the flags for COR, NOR & COT. We made some announcements (Don’t forget to RSVP to Steve-O’s BBQ Bash and to get some tickets for the bourbon raffle benefitting Hope Scarves). We also lifted up intentions for the no named stranger and his family as he lost his life the day before. Sewanee taught us it’s okay to be vulnerable and pleaded with us to get CPR certified. One never knows when he may be put in a situation where he could save someone’s life. It’s best to be prepared to know what to do for if/when that time ever comes.
In closing, I just wanted to thank those in attendance for allowing me to be a little silly on this day. One of the things I love about the core principal, peer led in rotating fashion, is that the Q is allowed to do whatever he can dream up. We all get to share a bit of who we are and what makes us unique. Challenge yourselves men to color outside the lines. That’s where the magic happens!
Until next time…
