What about Ice? He’s Killing Your Brain Like a Poisonous Mushroom. ToG Backblast 11/15/18

Q: Captain Insane-o

Pax (12): Diablo, Glenn Ross, Red Roof, Tronie Tron Tron, Digiorno, Bussscccchhhh, Violet, Mad Cow, Grinder, OJ, Abacus, CI

It’s been so long since I Q’d I screwed up the disclaimer. I even forgot the name of an exercise during the workout. Maybe it’s rust, maybe it’s stress, maybe it’s age. No matter the reason, here’s what went down.

Conditions: 34*, sleet, ice. There were branches down everywhere. Perf.

Gearlander: Too much, even with those conditions. I looked like a homeless fitness instructor. That’s primarily attributable to my ever growing hair, which is a full 3 months into the bet I made with Zartan and is, in a word, glorious. Oh, and I had Val, the 60lb sandbag Q with me.

Thanks to OJ – the John Belski of F3 Louisville – I knew the weather was going to be bad. Cold and wet.

My plan was to keep everyone together and off the ground, as much as possible. I also wanted to do something we hadn’t done before. Here’s a preview: My plan failed on both accounts.

COP:

Grassgrabbers 15xIC

Quad Stretches (silent 20 count each leg)

SSHs 15xIC

Thang 1:

Everyone lined up behind YHC, as I yoked Val onto my shoulders, for 1 mile NAR through the park to St. Matthews Baptist Church. This was a nice little jog (silent j) until we reached Nanz Avenue. Nanz has mature trees on both sides of the street. The combination of the night’s rain and the near freezing temperatures resulted in a coating of ice on all of said trees.

After seeing a transformer explode in the sky a few streets over, it became evident that we were tempting fate. But when a large limb from a tree on the side of Nanz just ahead fell into a nearby yard, we knew YHC truly was not a professional, despite my error in my disclaimer. Luckily, we were close to the SMBC parking lot where we were going to do the next part of the workout. I thought this would be a first, but Diablo said he’d already used it during his Ruck event. Failure 1.

Thang 2:

A little more warm up of …. Hmm ….. What are those called? YHC forgot, so I went with Hillbillies, and I’m sure no one noticed.

Hillbillies 20xIC

Copperhead Squats 20xIC

Grab a parking spot for side to side Line Jumps 20xIC

I then asked everyone to space out, grabbing a parking spot. From the end to the middle, each Pax was to broad jump down and to the shared middle line, then lunge walk the rest of the middle to the end of the next line. Basically, broad jump half the U, then lunge walk the other half. We did this for a number of spaces; at least 30.

Then, we had to go back to retrieve Val, and because it wasn’t raining too much at this point, we did Build-a-Bears. These are bearcrawls down, around and back up the parking spot U with a man maker at the end. Busch was talking a lot during the broad jumps, but not at all on these. Now, I love it when Busch talks because he’s a great guy and a great friend, but I know it’s challenging when he’s quiet. It may have also been that his hands were wet and cold, which was a result of me reneging on my promise not to get on the ground. Failure 2.

Sorry not sorry.

With time getting short, we had to get back to the startex. Busch grabbed Val and was off like a prom dress, but YHC slowed him down just enough to give this sagacious advice:

CI: “If you hear a branch coming down, just run. Forget about the sandbag. Just run away.”

Pretty sure it was OJ who quipped sarcastically, “Now I feel better.”

I guess Busch heard a branch breaking because he took off in a dead sprint. Once we eventually caught him, we stopped by the playground for some off-the-ground Mary.

The set was 20x of hanging leg lifts from right to middle to left back to middle for a four count. This was tough, but luckily Grinder was able to melt all the ice off the swing set where Mad Cow and I started with a blast of hot air.

Then, time was up.

COR, NOR (which is on the Twitter if you want to see how everyone looked), and announcements. The main announcement was for the Abacus-led ruck this Friday. Details are on the calendar on the website (www.f3louisville.com). Then, we ended with intentions, which included Glenn Ross asking us to remember that this month is pancreatic cancer month, which has affected many people we know. I then spent some time informing the Pax about Double Down and what’s happening with him. For anyone who knows him, you know Double Down is one of the most positive people in the world. He’s also a great friend to all of us. And while he’s going through this, I asked that we all pray for him, support him and be there for him. I know he will be back very soon.

I took us out with a story from my life. The story is irrelevant, but the point is this: Don’t put off to “next time” what you can do now. “Next time” may not come. So do those things for your wife, your kids, your friends, you co-workers, for each other NOW.

CI out.
