04.04.18 – BackBlast Veterans #Respect

Kilo mentioned to me that the Veteran’s site needed a Q last week.  I thought about it for a whole second before I said Yes!  I have Q’ed a few times before, and was really looking forward to Q’ing when it was not 30 degrees or below.  Plus I had a few items in mind that I was hoping to try out after the past couple of Black Ops that we have had there. The site still has so much more potential to tap into, that will only improve as construction completes on the rest of the park.

As I was getting my workout planned Sunday, and told my wife that I was Q’ing on Wednesday morning.  She checked the weather projected for this morning and proceeded to laugh for next half hour.  Seems like it was going to be chili.  Oh well, we do not get up for easy, and after posting in the ice, snow, and below zero weather, I said “Challenge Accepted!”  So I came up with a plan that would keep everyone warm, and hope that we would not have any snow or ice on the ground that would make me call an Omaha in the gloom.

I have a couple of FNGs lined up, but they gave me the usual excuses “I’ll go when it gets warmer”, or “I’m on Spring Break”, or “Who are you? I don’t even know you? How did you get in my car?”.  Whatev’s.  Kilo had told me a few other HIMs were planning on making it out (Newman, *cough*), however five would be enough. I was happy with the PAX that showed up and let them know that there were in the trusted hands and mind of someone who is not a professional.  Laying the disclaimer down, we began.

Quick mosey around lower level parking lot to warm up the legs and see if we had any later arrivals before we went to the first station.

I then picked up my bag and we ran over stone steps behind the backstop for the ball field.  I got a few looks about bringing my bag.  Kilo kept saying, “PK’s love bag”.  Get over it Kilo, not everyone wants their bags to be called love bags.  You do you.  Behind the backstop is a nice place for some Ascending Box Jumps.  The PAX spread out and we began, box jumps to the top.  We did one set of ten, and I could feel the burn in my quads already.

Then I lead the PAX up the hill to the main parking lot at the J-Town community center.  I took out of my bag 5 jump ropes.  I had intended the box jumps, run, and jump rope areas to be stations, however, as we had five we did got better together.  So with the jump ropes we did 5 minutes of jump rope work.  Then back to the box jump station.

Our feet had been moving pretty good so far, so I had to give everyone’s legs a little break.  20 Dips.  I was going to try and do them in cadence, however I must have been channeling Abacus or Little Jerry because I lost count.  Either way, I think everyone thought that we were going to get away without doing the Box Jumps again, but guess again.  5 times up and down.

Then back up the hill to the jump rope station.  Kilo took off and grabbed a jump rope to get started, so I knew that I must not have been working everyone hard enough.  I let him know the jump ropes were not required for the next Veterans exercise.  Time for some Jack Webb.  Yeah, Jack Webb is a Veteran, check it out, and remember that it is Just the Facts here.  After the PAX completed Jack Webb, I let them know that this is Veterans Park, not Veteran park.  So in celebration and thanks for his service as well we did an exercise named after Jack Webb’s cousin Lt. Dan Taylor.

As my legs turned to jello finishing Dan Taylor’s I then checked the time, and saw that we were running close on time.  As usual so much planned and so little time to do it all in.  We headed back to the Flag.  With a little time left, I tried to squeeze in an exercise to some tunes.  Meatball, said, “God No, I hate that ‘Ghostbuster’s’ song”.  I had done that one at the Mutt, and the Posh before.  No fear I told him, I was going to try something a little different, and asked if he had heard of the “In the Plank Tonight”.  Pulled this gem off of the Exercise listing.  Hold plank for the whole song of “In the Air Tonight”.  Unfortunately, we ran out of time 2.5 minutes in.   I am going to try this again another time with out without the PAX. Not a bad way to spend 5:36 minutes. Who knows, Kilo and I have another song that we heard on the radio that might be a new item for the website.  Will have to see if that pans out another day.

We ended with Name-O-Rama, announcements, and intentions.  I thanked the Sky Q for bringing us out to get better together.  The time in the gloom is a good break from the hustle and bustle that everyone has going on each day.  It was an honor to lead such HIMs this morning, and look forward to seeing everyone in the gloom for the next workout.  Thanks PK out.
