Circa 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower was alerted that thousands of US kids had failed a basic Swiss implemented fitness study. Panic ensued and shortly thereafter the first version of the Presidential Fitness Test was born. Fast forward to circa 1987, Mr. Kennedy was advising my fifth grade class on the strategies for mastering the flexed arm hang and then carefully measuring our sit-n-reach scores. Undoubtedly, I scored in the 85th percentile to get the award, or at least that is how I choose to remember it. The PFT was replaced in 2013 with a softer, more inclusive fitness program, but since we are all pre-millennial children, we’re going old school. To celebrate the beginning of class for public schools tomorrow, we’ll be taking our own Presidential Fitness Challenge. SYITG.
