Back-Blast Monday 01-18-2021 – The Motivator @ The Abyss

It was another record breaking morning at the Abyss. We didn’t eclipse the 33 PAX record set last Friday at Backflop’s Q, but we did shatter two other records. More on that later.

It was a bit dicey (i.e. icy) this morning and when I arrived Mr Hat, Uncle Sam and Jolly Rancher were already assessing the grounds and we confirmed that there was basically a sheet of ice covering the entirety of the Abyss. I guess Flip Flop was prophetic with his slack post calling me “infamous” as this had all the makings of a disaster. When Catfish pulled up I knew I was in trouble with half of F3 Louisville leadership now in attendance and providing plenty of unhelpful suggestions. No worries…we will just workout in the road and I’ll figure out something for the running.

PAX:  Flip flop, Mr. Roper, Uncle Sam (R), Tidwell, Cratchit, Catfish, F-Stop, Jolly, Rancher, Holy Roller (R), Yankovic (R), Mr. Hat, Dauber (Q)

So the first of the records shattered this morning: unless someone can prove otherwise we are claiming the record for F3 Louisville 60+ Respect PAX at The Abyss with three. Mad Respect gentleman!

COP was shaky as I was calling exercises but my mind was on how to modify my Q for the slick conditions. We did the normal kinda stuff (SSH, downward dog, mountain climbers, etc). Catfish said something about bear crawls and, boom, I had my modification!

The main thang was a ladder workout in honor of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. The playlist started with MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech (which gets more powerful and inspiring every time I listen to it) followed by an MLK Day playlist.

Ladder exercises: Merkins 20x, Lunges 40x (single count), Flutter Kicks 60x (2-count), Jump Squats 80x, BuRpees 100x

Instead of the originally planned interval running, we alternated lunge walk and bear crawl laps around the short track. Yikes, it turned into a serious leg day.

Even in the road it was slick and the PAX worked extra hard to complete the exercises while maintaining their footing (except when Tidwell fell but I heard him and Cratchit talking about liability insurance so I am sure it was a staged fall.  That reminds me…disclaimer was given and confirmed up front….suckers!!).

Most PAX were wrapping up the 100 burpees when time was called (Catfish was well on his way back down the ladder).  We circled around the flag for COT – CoR, NoR, Announcements, and Intentions.  Before a final prayer I shared three MLK Jr Quotes and what they mean to me:

  • “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.”
  • “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”
  • “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

As the PAX began to disperse we shattered another long held F3 record as both Yankovic and Uncle Sam complemented my Q. This is two more than the previous record. Yankovic said it was “really good” and luckily Cratchit was there to translate that for me as “it was better than any Pelican Q”.

Feeling pretty good about myself.
