BB Squid Q – Wisteria @ Pleasantville 10.02.2020

I showed up just a little early so I could check the bench height because I planed to do some box jumps. The height was good and the weinke was set. There were already some of the PAX there before I got there and they quickly began lining the street. I issued a challenge a couple days ago regarding the number of PAX. So far the Garden has had the rolled in with the deepest squad. I assumed that County or the Mutt were going to be the main challengers. Turns out, Pelican took most of his PAX to he BO IPC challenge when I came to County. The last time I came to Pleasantville the numbers were through the roof, but that was for a Backflop Q. I think he is taking lessons from Pelican, he too draws quite a crowd. I wasn’t anticipating a large crew but was ready just in case.

As it turned out, Pleasantville packed the house. We had 14 in attendance and they came ready to work.

We took a short mosey down to the stage and I explained that today’s warmup would look a little different. I had read of the benefits of a dynamic warm up versus a static warm up. I used my hand Seconds time app to create a routine of 13 thirty second exercises.

  • Toy Soldier
  • Abe Vigoda
  • Alternating Knee Tucks
  • Alternating Knee Turnouts
  • Alternating Lunge w/ Twist
  • Standing Torso Twist
  • Michael Phelps
  • Forward Arm Circles
  • Reverse Arm Circles
  • Butt Kicks
  • High Knees
  • SSH
  • Burpees

We were warmed up and the mumblechatter was off and running. Pelican did not appear pleased that a timer was telling him what to do. I believe this only because he knew he couldn’t erase the things he didn’t like off a phone like he did with Backflop’s dry-erase board.

I asked the PAX to head to the ampitheatre seating and to space out and pick a spot. We were going to stay in one spot and simply pivot. Since Holly Roller was out of town, I decided to recycle Mondays WO. They have a great setup here for some around the clock merkin work.

Thang 1:
Each merkin will occur at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock on a step.

  • Incline Merkin
  • Left hand on step
  • Derkin
  • Right hand on step
  • Box jump
  • Step up w/ knee
  • Calf raise
  • Incline sphinx
  • Wide w/ left hand on curb
  • Diamond derkin
  • Wide with right on curb
  • Box jump
  • Step up w/ knee
  • Calf raise
  • Shoulder tap incline
  • Right hand reach w/ left on curb
  • Shoulder tap derkin
  • Left hand reach w/ right on curb
  • Box jump
  • Step up w/ knee
  • Calf raise

The last time I did these, I went straight through all of the merkins. This time I broke them up and it allowed improved stamina throughout the workout. Once we made it through the first thang, we took a mosey up and back down the hill and ended back on the stage for some mary work.

Again I set a timer (You’re welcome Pelican) and let it do all the work.

  • BBSU
  • Freddie Mercury
  • LBC
  • Star Crunch
  • Flutter Kicks
  • American Hammers
  • Gas Pumps
  • Hollow Hold
  • Plank
  • J Lo

We finished up with just enough time to mosey back to the flag. This morning was a blast. After doing some investigative stalking on Pelican’s Myspace page and his AOL Instant Messenger history, I found that his Snoop love was just a facade. As it turns out Pelican is a huge boy band and old school 90’s pop fan. Because of this discovery I treated the PAX to a soundtrack filled with New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, MC Hammer, Boyz II Men and Skee-Lo. It was clear that I had tapped into the PAX’s nostalgia. With each new song came old memories. None loved it more than Pelican though. I am not sure if he will even remember the workout. He spent his time sounding like grandma in her rocking chair as he educated Tidwell in all things 90’s pop. He showed off his choreography skills and debated with enthusiasm which NKOTB was his favorite. He’ll probably go home and break out the Zumbaz and cassette tapes.

We wrapped up with COR, NOR, named the FNG (Welcome Hard Wood), announcements and intentions.

Until next time,
